Differentiation from First Principles
The investigation leads learners to calculate the gradient of chords from a fixed point to a neighbouring point, giving a sequence of values that converge to the gradient of the curve at the fixed point. A table is produced where each line contains the gradient calculation. The pattern in the decimals makes the limit very apparent with good discussion material arising. This is then followed by the algebraic equivalent of differentiation from first principles.
